General Vastus Test

Here is a simple test to look for problems with any of the vastus muscles.

bring in heel with
knee raised

  1. Put patient on back.
  2. With knee flexed and thigh at 90 degrees, bring heel to buttock.
  3. Note point where resistance is felt.

Good: No restriction: If the heel reaches the buttock with no resistance, the vastus muscles are probably OK.

Not so Good: If the heel cannot reach the buttock and resistance is felt, there may be restriction in the vastus muscles. Look for trigger points.
